Credit Card Numbers

The small plastic card that is issued to the users of the system of payment is known as a credit card. Here the person issuing some what lends a particular amount of money to customer of the card and this money is to be paid later to the merchant.

Credit cards are given to the consumers after their accounts have been completely approved of by the one providing the credit after which the holders of credit card can utilize it to make purchases at merchants accepting that card. While making a purchase the cardholder agree to pay the card issuer the amount that he is supposed to and he also indicates his consent to pay by signing the receipt with some record of the details of the card. This receipt also indicates the amount that is to be paid and the PIN (personal identification number).

The credit card numbers are incoherent for the customers because most of them do not really know what this is all about. Although there are phone companies, department stores and also the gas companies that have their very own numbering system like ANSI Standard X4.13.-1983 is the system to be used by the majority of the national credit card systems. What the numbers actually mean can be understood is a very simple manner like the first digit that is there in your credit card number is to signify the system as in what are company cards is it or what does it do. For example we have a Discovery card, MasterCard, Visa, Travel/entertainment cards like American Express or the world renowned Diners Club. The structure of the card number also varies by system what ever it may be Carte Blanche and Diners Club card numbers start with 38 and the American Express card numbers start with 37.

American Express is the one that possesses numbers in which digit three and four are type and currency and digits five till number eleven are the account number, from digits twelve to fourteen they are the card number within the account and digit 15 is a check digit. MasterCard on the other hand is the one in which digits two and three from two to four and from two to five or two till six are the bank number. This depends on whether that digit two is a 1 or 2 or 3 or some other number. The digits that come after the bank number up till the digit fifteen are the account number and a digit sixteen is more or less a check digit here. Similarly a Visa has two digits through six and these are the bank number then digit seven till twelve or seven through fifteen are the account number and digit thirteen or six here is a check digit.
